Sustainable water management for Galliker

When it rains, most people think of wet roads or gray days. At Galliker we see it as something else - a valuable resource.

We collect rainwater at several locations and use it specifically in our operational processes - from flushing toilets and washing vehicles to watering green spaces and recooling cooling systems.

In logistics centers 1 to 3, rainwater is used to flush the toilets. With a consumption of around 10 liters per flush, thousands of liters of drinking water can be saved every year. Rainwater also plays a central role at the LC4 site. It is used exclusively for recooling the cooling system of the temperature-controlled storage areas. With a capacity of around 300m3, the rainwater storage tank ensures that sufficient water reserves are available for cooling at all times.

The water requirement in the washing facilities is particularly high. Rainwater is also used in the truck wash lanes at the LC1 site and in the export hall. In the three-lane car wash at the Bike Center, the rainwater is heated to around 35 °C using solar panels on the roof to facilitate the washing process. Before the dirty water is drained off, it flows through a splitting machine after the washing process, which removes larger dirt particles and thus enables it to be safely returned to the water cycle.

In the car washes in other areas, such as the Car Center and the PDI Center, drinking water is used for the washing processes, but here too the focus is on conserving resources. 90 percent of the water used is reused after pre-treatment. The remaining 10 percent is properly discharged into the waste water. Around 120 liters are required per wash cycle, with around 108 liters coming from a previous wash process and only 12 liters of fresh drinking water having to be added. Over one million vehicles have been washed at the Car Center since 2015. This water management system has saved around 108 million liters of drinking water in this area alone.

Water management at Galliker involves much more than the careful use of drinking water and rainwater. We also ensure that the systems function reliably over the long term. This includes regular maintenance of the rainwater tanks and professional disposal of the sludge that collects there. In this way, we ensure that the systems work efficiently and that the water quality is permanently guaranteed.

This shows how we understand sustainability at Galliker - soberly, efficiently and always with an eye on the big picture. For us, this means continuously questioning everyday processes and adapting them where possible and sensible.
